Some of the biggest names in the industry will be judging the competition. This years judges include the legendary Noddy Holder, Radio 1’s Greg James, Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale, Urban DJ, Presenter and Radio 1’s Ras Kwame, BBC Introducing’s Bethan Elfyn, legendary drummer Darren Ashford who’s played with the likes of The Backstreet Boys, Black Eyed Peas and Lionel Richie, and record producer Steve Lyon, who will all be casting their eye over the unsigned talent.

Live and Unsigned is the biggest original music competition in the UK for unsigned bands and artists. Attracting over 30, 000 entries in the past three years, it’s set itself apart from its predecessors by offering and promoting live, original music. It’s now established as the definitive music competition for original acts and it’s open to all genres of music from Heavy Rock to Rap.

So, what are the acts battling it out for? The chance to play on the main stage of the Live and Unsigned Festival at the 02 in London on 10th July. There’s also plenty of opportunities and awards up for grabs along the way, with a prize pool worth over £75, 000. The overall winner of the competition will be offered a recording and management contract with Future Music with an investment of up to £30, 000 to release their single and they’ll get the opportunity to develop their own clothing brand to sell online and in retail with Extreme State.

The competition provides acts with a host of opportunities to develop and expose their talent. There is an array of free master classes on offer with ICMP including drums, bass, guitar and vocal. The master classes are with some of the best names in the industry including drummer Pat Petrillo who has played with Gloria Gaynor and Patti Lebelle and a bass lesson with Lawrence Cottle who has worked with Eric Clapton and The Bee Gees. These classes will give acts the opportunity to not only learn new techniques and develop their performance skills, but they’ll also have the opportunity to take part in exclusive Q&A sessions. There’s also plenty of exposure opportunities for acts this year, including editorial coverage in some of the UK’s most popular magazines and websites. Other prizes on offer include festival slots, clothing, media exposure, days out and recording time.

Chris Grayston, Events Director of Live & Unsigned explains “We’re all about originality, Live ability and credibility. There’s over £75, 000 in prizes up for grabs this year so there’s plenty of opportunities for all acts taking part, not just for the winner! We’ve got some fantastic judges on board this year who will all be bringing their wealth of experience with them. With the Live and Unsigned Festival scheduled for the best venue in the country, the 02 in London, this really is going to be the biggest year for the competition yet!”

The winners of 2010 will be thrust into the media spotlight through television, radio and the press and will be given the opportunity to tour the UK. One act who has caught the judge’s eye this year are the local talent, Fuel For The Fire from Peterborough, now competing in the Area Final. New Riverside Festival Drop-In Sessions launched
riverside_logos.jpg

A brand new monthly drop in service is being launched on Saturday 27th March by the volunteer organisers of the annual Stamford Riverside Festival. The sessions are being provided with support from Lincolnshire County Council under their ‘This is Art’ branding. The launch marks the start of a new partnership between the Riverside Festival and Stamford Library, which will see them working together on a number of initiatives over the coming months.
The new Riverside Festival Drop-in Sessions will take place in the Community Corner at Stamford Library, High Street, Stamford, on the last Saturday of each month.  Members of the festival team will be available to talk to the public between 10.00am and 12 noon.
Festival organiser Barbara Sandbach said “The aim of these drop-in sessions is to help improve our accessibility to the public and in particular to local residents. Thousands of people attend the festival each year and many would like to know more about how we are organised and how they can get involved and support us; because the festival is organised entirely by a small team of volunteers we don’t have an office to work from so people can find it difficult to contact us and find out more about the event. We hope these drop-ins will help by providing an informal chance for people to talk to us face to face.”
Information will be available at the sessions about the wide range of volunteering opportunities to help the festival year round and at the event. Last year around 100 volunteers gave more than 5,000 hours of their time to help make the festival a success, and with plans to expand this year even more help is needed. Volunteering with the festival is a great way to meet people, learn new skills, and help the community, while having fun. Volunteering with the festival is open to everyone and the current age range of our volunteers is from 15 - 75+.
The festival team will also be able to outline their plans and arrangements for this year’s event which will mark the 10th Anniversary under it’s Riverside name, although the history of the festival can be traced back much further under its previous names of Music/Rock on the Meadows. Last year Riverside attracted its largest audience to date with up to 17,500 people on site at any one time, and footfall across the day of 46,000 people. To help accommodate the extra visitors and provide even more entertainment for the growing audience, organisers are planning* to extend the festival over two days Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th July.  * subject to securing the necessary premises licence and funding
The Riverside team will also be on hand to explain more about the entertainment that is being planned, most of the Riverside favourites will be back again, but with many new elements being introduced on both days. Saturday will have a similar look and feel to previous Riverside Festivals while Sunday will have a firm emphasis on family audiences with the whole day having a much more relaxed, laid back and chilled out feeling. The musical programming across the two days will feature very different genres of music many new to Riverside including jazz and classical performances, and organisers are also planning to expand the range of other performance and non performance arts showcased at the event, with even more activities aimed at children.
Riverside are also working in partnership with a much wider range of local organisations this year and are still keen to hear from and work with even more. Barbara said “We want Riverside to involve as many local people as possible many more voluntary & community groups, schools and colleges, are getting involved which is fantastic”. Riverside are also expanding their partnerships with statutory and emergency services and this together with support from local businesses, and local newspapers, magazines and radio stations means Riverside is now one of the largest community events in the region.
Tony Rawlinson Riverside’s Event Manager said “We have listened very carefully to all the feedback we have received from the public and other agencies, about past events and what they would like to see in future. Taking account of this feedback we believe our plans are both ambitious and realistic.”
Tony went on to say “We have put in lots of new safety and security measures to address the concerns we have received; while at the same time developing plans for expanding the entertainment we offer to meet the needs of our growing audience. Riverside is already a very popular event in the Towns calendar and we believe our proposals for this year will help make it even better in the future.
These monthly Riverside Drop-in sessions will provide local people with a chance to come and find out more about the festival and our plans and provide us with an opportunity to address any remaining concerns.”
The Riverside Team are looking forward to meeting lots of new people at the Drop In Sessions which are scheduled to take place as follows :
Dates :         Saturdays:  27th March, 24th April, 29th May, 27th June, & 31st July
Time :                  10am - 12 noon
Venue :          Community Corner, Stamford Library, High Street, Stamford

4th Road to Riverside Festival Competition launched
riverside_logos.jpg
The Stamford Mercury newspaper are once again supporting the Riverside Team by running a competition to secure the final slot for a band/artist to perform at the popular Riverside Festival which this year is scheduled to take place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July on The Meadows in the centre of Stamford.

Entries to the competition will be taken until April 26th.  After that the most popular band/artist as voted for by the public in the Stamford Mercury and on-line will win a main stage slot to play at the festival.

Festival Organiser Martin Smith said: “This is a great opportunity for bands and solo singers to get their fan base behind them to ensure they play at Riverside. In this MySpace and Facebook era bands and artists are becoming very adept at managing their fan bases and this is a chance for them to use these new media resources and pull out all the stops to get people to vote for them.” Martin went on to say “The competition is exciting for us as organisers as we have no idea what genre of music the winners will represent, past winners have included indie/rock, teen metal and pop/punk bands. With our stages featuring an even broader range of musical genres this year there is even more scope for competition entries.”
As applications direct to the festival have now closed, the only way bands/artists can apply to play at the festival is to enter the Stamford Mercury’s Road to Riverside Competition.  By the 28th February which was the closing date for applications direct to the Festival, Riverside Organisers had received applications from more than 700 bands and artists! The Festivals Music Committees are still working their way through listening to and short-listing all these applications to decide the final line up. The high level of applications direct to the festival means that competition from Road to Riverside entries to secure the final place on offer to play at the festival is going to be really fierce this year.
This competition is a real chance to play to a large audience, last year more than 46,000 people visited the festival over the course of the day, and this year is already being predicted to be even busier with the festival looking to expand to a two day event this year.
Pervious winners of the competition say playing at the festival has really helped to boost their profile. 2007 winners The Brays have gone on to play at the 02 Indigo Arena and were selected by Britain Rocks, to be one of the flagship bands on its promotional tour of US Universities; while 2008 winners were the Prophecy True from Bourne who at the time of winning had an average age of just 14 years of age. Last years winners White Clouds and Gunfire recently told Soundscape Magazine that “the Riverside Festival was their best experience in their business so far” and “has inspired them to keep working hard to do bigger and better things.”
Stamford Mercury Editor Eileen Green said “Road to Riverside has been a real success in the past and I’m sure we will get a fantastic response again this year. The Riverside Festival is a superb event for Stamford and shows what a vibrant music scene we have in this area.”
To enter the Road to Riverside Competition please e-mail your MySpace links or music demos to smeditor@stamfordmercury.co.uk, you can also send a CD to the Stamford Mercury at Sheep Market, Stamford, PE9 2QZ, marking your entries clearly Road To Riverside, but whichever route you choose please make sure you apply by no later than the 26th April. The bands/artists entering will be featured in the Stamford Mercury over the coming weeks and their music uploaded to the Stamford Mercury website at www.stamfordmercury.co.uk/riverside. The public will then have just two weeks to vote for their favourite by using a voting slip in the newspaper or voting on-line.
Further details about the competition and the competition rules are available from the Stamford Mercury.
